Posted 6/19/06

Opening to the public in 1927, the Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History annually draws approximately 90,000 visitors from all over the Untied States.  The museum holds natural specimens from North America and cultural artifacts significant to the Great Plains and Nebraska. Three floors of exhibits and dioramas offer visitors a chance to experience everything from a polar bear from Alaska to Kool-Aid, which was invented in Hastings.  In addition to the exhibits, the museum also offers daily planetarium shows in the J. M. McDonald Planetarium and large format and 35mm films in the Lied Super Screen Theatre.

Mission Statement

The Hastings Museum brings to life the natural and cultural history of Hastings, Adams County and the Great Plains of Nebraska.  The museum connects Nebraska to the world and universe through educational programs, exhibits and films, inspiring greater public respect for and understanding of our past and future.

The museum is making plans to renovate several exhibition spaces.  Guided by the mission and proper stewardship of the museum’s collection, staff is planning the first renovation to the current display of firearms located on the lower level of the museum.  This new exhibit will illustrate the role weaponry has played in shaping cultures in America.  Protection, Provision and Power: The History of Weapons That Shaped the Nation will be designed to appeal to collectors as well as casual visitors by presenting the social aspect of weapons and their relevance to today’s society.
